Magnolia Top

Do you ever purchase yarn and then hoard it until the perfect ideas or project comes along? That’s what happened with the Magnolia Top. I purchased the yarn back in early 2020, if not late 2019.

When planning out my Summer 2021 designs I remembered that I had this yarn stashed away and it would be perfect for the idea I had. The colors of the yarn reminded me of Magnolia trees in the spring.

The Yarn

The yarn I used is Comfy Color Mist by Knitpicks/WeCrochet. I used the colorways Raspberry Cream (magenta), Dahlia (pink), Chive Blossom (purple), and Foggy Beach (grey). The yarn is a worsted weight and is a 75% pima cotton/25% acrylic blend.

This was the first time I used this yarn and I would definitely work with it again. It is super soft and easy to work with, I have no complaints at all about it.

Supplies

The supplies you’ll need include:

– 700 – 1200 yards Comfy Color Mist from Knitpicks/WeCrochet or comparable yarn
– I/5.50mm crochet hook
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
– Stitch markers

Stitches and Abbreviations

The stitches I used for the Magnolia Top are:

Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
RS – Right side
SDc – Starting Double Crochet
Sl St – Slip Stitch
Sk – Skip
Sp(s) – Space(s)

Stitch Definition:

Starting Double Crochet – (also known as Long Chain Double
Crochet or Chainless Starting Double Crochet.) Pull up your loop to the height of your usual Double Crochet. Yarn over, insert into the 1st St, yarn over, pull through the Stitch, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook, yarn over, pull through the remaining two loops on your hook.

My favorite technique for this is the one found here from Moogly:
How to Crochet: Improved Chainless Starting Double Crochet (Right Handed) – YouTube

Pattern Notes:

XS – 30” bust; S – 34”; M – 38”; L – 42”; XL – 46”; 2X – 50”; 3X – 54”; 4X – 58”.

Pattern is written in American Crochet Terms.

1” of positive ease for final measurement.

Ch 3 can be substituted for SDc.

Construction consists of: working the body in turned rounds from the bottom up & two panels for the upper body to form armholes.

Sizes – Pattern is worked in size XS

new skein/ball to do the back panel, just in case you need to add
to the front panel for a proper fit.

S – 34” – 750;
M – 38” – 800;

Sweet & Simple Blog Hop

The Alpine Scarf was featured in Week 2 of the Sweet & Simple Blog Hop hosted by Carroway Crochet.

The Yarn

I decided to go with a Caron Latte Cake for the yarn on the Alpine Scarf. The yarn is so soft and has a beautiful texture to it.

Once the scarf was complete all I pictured was a snowy night in a quant mountainside town. The perfect accessory to wear on a date while walking the quiet storefronts in a resort town in the mountains. I was watching a lot of holiday Hallmark movies at the time if that helps you visualize it too.

The Design

Can you believe that it has taken me almost a year to design a “traditional” scarf. Over 25 patterns and not a single scarf that is close to a scarf you can buy at a local store that is machine made.

The Yarn

The yarn I picked for the Citrine Scarf is Bernat Baby Velvet in the color way Yolk Yellow. After comparing yarn to citrine stone beads in my local Michael’s Arts & Crafts store, this yarn was the closest match. The color has since been discontinued but obviously you can pick any color of your liking.

Supplies Needed

– 492 yards of Bernat Baby Velvet (one skein)
– I/5.5mm crochet hook
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
– Yarn needle

Stitches Used

Ch – Chain
Hhdc – Herringbone Half Double Crochet
St(s) – Stich(es)

These same stitches were used in Marshmallow – Part of the Frosting Collection, a series of FREE dishcloth patterns.

Stitch Definition

Hhdc – Herringbone Half Double Crochet: YO, insert hook in stitch, YO, pull up a loop and pull through first loop on hook, YO, pull through both loops on hook.

Pattern Notes

A stitch count has been provided at the end of each row.

Any worsted weight yarn will work.

Meeting gauge isn’t a huge issue, you’re may be wider or more narrow than mine, but that’s ok.

Opal Shawl

***Post contains affiliate links- which means if you make a purchase from the links below, I will get a small percentage of the sales at no additional cost to you ***

Can you believe that there are only two designs left in the Birthstone Collection now?!

The Birthstone Collection is the theme for 2020. Each month I have a cowl, scarf, or shawl pattern in the color of that month’s birthstone.

October’s birthstones are pink tourmaline and opal. As you can tell I decided on opal instead of the pink tourmaline.

Previous designs include:
Garnet Cowl – January
Amethyst Scarf – February
Zoe’s Aquamarine Infinity Scarf – March
Diamond Shawl – April
Emerald Asymmetrical Shawl – May
Pearl Infinity Cowl – June
Ruby Shawl – July
Peridot Shawl– August
Sapphire Shawl – September

The Yarn

When I first saw the Summer Nights by Lion Brand Yarns hit the shelves I just knew that the colorway ‘Ocean Cove’ was destined to become the Opal Shawl.

The yarn is a variegated yarn that switches from pink to blue, to purple, to green, and then back to pink. There is also a piece of silver thread that helps make the yarn shimmer.

There are many types of opals and they all vary on colors and intensities. I envisioned the whiter opals when comparing the yarn to the stone. With the mixture of the milky white base and splashes of greens and blues, sometimes pinks and purples, all varying based on how the stone was formed and how the jeweler presented it.

All these things are the reason the yarn was calling to me to be named Opal.

Supplies

– Approximately 1100 yards of Lion Brand’s Summer Nights or similar fingering weight yarn
– F/3.75 Crochet hook
– Measuring tape
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Blocking materials (optional)

Pattern Notes

A stitch count has been provided.

Blocking is not necessary but advised.

Stitches & Abbreviations

Ch – Chain
Ehdc – Extended Half Double Crochet
Inc – Increase
MC – Magic Circle
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
St(s) – Stitch(es)

Stitch Definition

Ehdc – Extended Half Double Crochet: YO, insert hook in to stitch, YO and pull up a loop (3 loops), YO and pull through 1st loop (3 loops), YO and pull through all 3 loops.

The Pattern

The Opal Shawl is classified as an ‘Easy’ pattern. The design consists of only one stitch and easy to follow instructions on when to increase to form the semi-circle.

It was originally written to be used for fingering weight yarn but a simple switch to different weight yarn and hook would be a get adjustment.

Availability

This pattern is available to purchase on Ravelry.
